Mentorship & Influence

Show notes

A year as an honorary member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority has reminded me of a lesson worth sharing: people we have never met are being shaped by what we do and how we do it. In this solo episode, we talk about why mentoring reaches further than we realize, the mantra that guides how I live and lead (never compromise who you are personally to become who you wish to be professionally), and why the opportunity to find a mentor, and to be one, has never been wider. At the end of the day, the whole world is watching.

So I've been sharing solo podcasts with you guys recently. Family that thank you as I'm enjoying them myself, because it's giving me an opportunity to rethink some really important lessons that I've learned all the life. Let me know if it's working for you. So it's just over a year now that I've been an honorary soror in the Delta Sigma Theta sorority. And wow, let me tell you one of the things that has really excited me. And I gotta say, there's so much that exciting about the women, the work and the welcome that I've received. I just gotta say though, that, every event, every experience that I've had as a member of this organization has brought people full of who've come to me and said, you know, you've been my mentor or you've been my best friend in my head. Oh wow, I'm here because I took from you this information and I I mean, that's a regular occurrence when I'm walking around and I'm living my life, but let's be clear to be a member of Delta Sigma Theta Subroid, or any of the D9 surrogies and fraternities means that you are a person who's already met some significant achievement and some high standards of living and behavior. And so to have these folks come up and look up to me has blown me away. It has also put me back in the classroom and helped me to remember and to appreciate the lesson that there are people who we are helping to shape their ideas, their decisions without ever having shaken their hands. and the experiences that we go through by the influences of people who we look up to, we admire, or even if we're just looking at the thing they did and how they did that, how they built that should really reference us, how important it is for us to be mindful, we're doing that same thing for others. You know, I thought about this. in a business way, I also thought about it in a very personal way. You know, one of my life matches is never compromised when you are personally, to the company you wish to be professionally. And I've worked. I think with some legitimacy to express that in how I live, how I interact with people, I've got to say I think that's a foundation of how we meant to people forward. There are young folks out there who are new in their careers who I'm learning every day from. Now, I talk about not judging people. Very often, they're not living the same style of life I would look to, but they're doing some of the same things in life that I still have aspiration and I still find joy to do. And so this idea of mentoring has become such a broader opportunity with the advantage of technology, we get to follow people through their social media. We get to meet people through organizations that we join or that we buy tickets to events of. All of this is an opportunity to find a mentor as well as to be a mentor. At the end of the day is kind of what my mom used to say. You may not be aware of it,
